▪ Kalo Cocktail Items ▪
The 1920s was a great time for the Kalo Shop. It was the heyday of 20th century conspicuous consumption. The economy was booming. Wealthy customers wanted to treat themselves to the finest accoutrements and lavish displays of success -- and that meant silver. Entertaining was an important social necessity. When guests arrived you could pour them a drink from a bottle into highball glasses. But it was so much more impressive to roll out the sterling drink set.
The cocktail set below is built around a fine Kalo 25" tray. It is somewhat surprising that a set this lovely would have engraved rather than applied monograms, but taste is subjective, and they do make everything look a bit more streamlined.
The large mixer below is a massive, heavy object that probably poured quite a few mint juleps (it was owned by the celebrated racing stable Calumet farms -- a lot of hip flasks were probably used there as well). The smaller mixer is notable for the unusual and striking repoussé work on its side.
